The player who sits to the dealer’s left leads any card other than the spade for the first trick. Every player, in the clockwise direction in turn will have to follow the suit if they have the appropriate cards and if they are not able to follow the suit because they do not have the cards, the player will be able to play any card they have.
The trick which has a spade is often won by the contract which plays the highest spade; in cases where no spade is played, then the trick will be won by the highest card of the suit which is being led. The winner of every trick will be leading to the next. Possibly spades might not be led until further where one of the players have played the spade where there was a lead of another suit or leader of the contract does not have anything other than the spades left in his hand.
“Breaking” spades is a common reference given to playing the first spade. The team which takes the maximum tricks as its bid calls for gets a score which is equal to 10 times the bid. Extra tricks known as overtricks are worthy of an extra point each. Overtricks in common terms are referred to as sandbags. The team which gets more than 10 bags will have 100 or more points reduced from its score. All bags which are beyond ten are carried over to the next 10 overtricks cycle.
