Nil Bonus and Overtrick Penalty

When you play free spades you are likely to be aware of what “lead” in trick and trump games eventually mean?

Essentially “lead” when you play free spades refers to having a player to start a new “round of trick” by having him put the first card in a round by virtue of him having won the previous trick.

In some cases when you play free spades you are likely to come across players in a partnership making more than the normal amount of bids, where the total of the bids of the team will be more than 13 in this case, this bid is known as overbid.

In cases where there are going to be too much of overtricks it leads to sandbagging where the partnership is penalized by getting penalty (deducting points) for taking too many tricks than they should actually take with the hand they hold.

There are going to be some other bids, which will be nil, where the player will be preventing to take any tricks to avoid overtricks thereby preventing penalty.

Lead, nil, overbid and sandbags and penalties needs to be understood clearly to make a successful spades playing.

• A set of cards will be dealt to each player.
• Each player will be laying their card to make the tricks for the round.
• The player with the highest ranking suit will win the round.
• The next round proceeds.
• Again tricks are continued until the determined points are made by each player.
• Nil and overtricks will be calculated accordingly.
• Scores will be calculated by making the appropriate deductions for overbids.
